RYOJI YAMAUCHI

Ryoji Yamauchi explores the “modes of existence” between human life and the surrounding landscape through his work. He traces the contours of human presence as it resonates with nature, aiming to reflect historical and social contexts in his photographs.

Having grown up in Hida, a mountainous region in Japan, and currently living in Aichi, Yamauchi draws on these two perspectives to sense the duality of landscapes—the charm of traditional scenery alongside traces of unseen exhaustion and exploitation. During his early years, he was largely unaware of the relationship with urban environments, but living in cities has since allowed him to perceive the complex relationships and subtle tensions that lie within peripheral landscapes.

In his earlier work, he focused on Asian urban spaces, examining how humans navigate existence and relationships within artificially constructed environments and infrastructures. His current work shifts attention to rural Japan, where the influence of topography and climate is more directly manifest, exploring the interactions between people, land, topography, and climate.

Standing within spaces where the city and periphery, sensibility and reason, memory and the present intersect, Yamauchi’s work embodies these tensions and reveals layered structures and the overlapping temporal and social contexts behind the landscape.

私の作品は、人間の生とその周囲の風景とのあいだにある「存在の様態」を探求するものである。人間の存在が自然と響き合う輪郭をなぞり、歴史や社会の文脈を写真に映し出すことを目指している。

飛騨で育ち、現在は愛知で暮らす。この二つの視点が、古き良き風景の魅力と、見えない疲弊や搾取の痕跡という二重性を感知させる。幼少期には都市との関係性を意識していなかったが、都市で暮らすうちに、周縁の風景に潜む複雑な関係性や微細な歪みが見えるようになった。

これまでの作品では、アジアの都市空間を舞台に、人間が人工的に構築された環境やインフラの中で、どのように存在や関係を形づくっているかを探った。現在は日本の地方へ視線を移し、地勢や気候の影響がより直接的に現れる環境で、人と土地・地勢・気候の相互作用を記録することに取り組んでいる。

都市と周縁、感性と理性、記憶と現在が交錯する空間に立ち両者の揺れを内包しながら制作された作品は、単なる景色の表層を越えて風景の背後にある多層的な構造や時間的・社会的文脈の重なりを映し出す対話の場として立ち現れる。
